Iron production, a process that dates back to ancient civilizations, has evolved significantly over the centuries. From the early bloomery furnaces to the modern blast furnaces, the extraction and refinement of iron have played a crucial role in shaping human history. The production of iron involves the reduction of iron ores, typically hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4), using carbon-based fuels such as coal or natural gas. This process, known as smelting, requires extremely high temperatures, typically above 1000°C, and results in the production of pig iron, which can then be further refined into steel. However, iron production is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with the industry accounting for around 7% of global CO2 emissions. As the world transitions towards more sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices, the iron production industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and adopt more eco-friendly technologies, such as hydrogen-based reduction and carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems.
